This is a very readable account restoring FDR to his central place in directing the American war effort. It is at times too dismissive of those who disagreed with FDR and at times the writing could be tighter.

In this second volume of a now-projected trilogy of books, Nigel Hamilton continues his examination of FDR's direction of World War II as US Commander in Chief, focusing on the year 1943. The subtitle "Battle with Churchill" reflects Hamilton's repeated theme, namely, that for all Churchill's brilliance and incredible moral leadership, his military impulses were too often ill-considered, mercurial, and nearly disastrous, whereas FDR, on the other hand, was steady, and often a better strategist than his military professionals.

With hundreds of books written about FDR, and thousands about WWII, Hamilton reveals the real challenges and triumphs of Franklin Roosevelt as Commander in Chief of the free nations of the Western Alliance. Superb history.
